The Embassy was established in Beijing, China on 20 August 2007. The Embassy is currently headed by H.E. Dr. Fazeel Najeeb, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Maldives, who presented his Letter of Credence to His Excellency Xi Jin Ping, President of the People’s Republic of China, on 12 December 2024.

The first Ambassador of Maldives to Japan was H.E. Mr. Ahmed Latheef. He presented his Letter of Credence to President of People’s Republic of China in 3 April 2008. He was recalled on 28 March 2012.
